Approaches to the Study of Southeast Asia is a reading-based module that examines conceptual and empirical approaches to the region. Southeast Asia comprises 11 sovereign states: five on the mainland—Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam—and six in maritime Southeast Asia—Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Timor-Leste. ASEAN represents the region through 10 member states and one observer state with a roadmap to full membership. Southeast Asia has an estimated population of 705 million, or about 8.5% of the world’s population. Southeast Asian scholarship reflects four broad intellectual currents: defining the region and tracing the field’s institutional development; establishing an autonomous historiography; shifting knowledge production away from Western institutions; and linking area studies with disciplinary theory. The first considers whether Southeast Asia is a coherent cultural region or a category shaped by outside institutions and geopolitical interests. The second challenges Eurocentric narratives that treat the region as either a passive arena of colonial rivalry or a product of Indianization and Sinicization. The third shifts intellectual authority away from Western institutions and Western-centered historical frameworks by centering Southeast Asian scholarship and treating regional evidence as a basis for broader analysis. The fourth weighs deep, inductive, language-based contextual study against formal, deductive social-scientific models. Key scholars whose works or views will be considered include Donald K. Emmerson and Thongchai Winichakul on the construction of the region and national geo-bodies; Russell H. Fifield and Benedict Anderson on the institutional development of Southeast Asian studies; John R. W. Smail, Paul H. Kratoska, Henk Schulte Nordholt, and Remco Raben on autonomous history and locating the region; O. W. Wolters, Clifford Geertz, and Michael Aung-Thwin on indigenous models of political order and interpretations of the past; Anthony Reid and Victor Lieberman on global and comparative history; and Erik Martinez Kuhonta, Dan Slater, and Tuong Vu, alongside Thongchai Winichakul, on the relationship between area studies, knowledge production, and disciplinary theory. Additional works by Benedict Anderson will be integrated as appropriate: his analysis of the idea of power in Javanese culture will inform discussions of indigenous models of political order, while his comparative work on nationalism, including Southeast Asian cases, will inform discussions of nationalism in a global context. The reading list will be updated before the module begins. This module is intended for advanced participants with a background in Southeast Asian studies who wish to explore the methodological foundations of studying the region.
