Vietnam’s August Revolution of 1945: Local, National, and Southeast Asian Perspectives is an intensive 12-session online course delivered over six weeks. It examines the revolution at three interconnected levels: local variations in political mobilization and revolutionary outcomes across northern, central, and southern Vietnam; the national struggle over leadership, sovereignty, and state formation; and the Southeast Asian context of wartime occupation, imperial collapse, and postwar decolonization. Also known as the General Uprising of August (tổng khởi nghĩa tháng tám) or simply the August Revolution (cách mạng tháng tám), the event marked a decisive turning point in Vietnam’s political, social, and cultural history. It ended more than 80 years of French colonial rule, abolished the monarchy, culminated in the proclamation of the independence of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam on September 2, 1945, and set the stage for a prolonged struggle for national independence and reunification. Across these three levels, the module applies major theoretical approaches concerning global conjuncture and state breakdown, leadership, ideology, revolutionary organization, urban political mobilization, and peasant-based mobilization. This six-week module develops these three levels of analysis through six themes: (1) revolutionary theory and the colonial foundations of nationwide upheaval; (2) anti-colonial networks and revolutionary leadership; (3) the Second World War, Japanese occupation, and the collapse of colonial authority across Vietnam and Southeast Asia; (4) local and regional variations in revolutionary politics across northern, central, and southern Vietnam; (5) the August Revolution’s national culmination in independence and state formation; and (6) comparative decolonization in Vietnam, Indonesia, Burma, Cambodia, and Laos. Hosted on ilearnforum.com, this exploratory module is designed for advanced undergraduates, entering MA students, professionals, and others with a background in modern Vietnamese or Southeast Asian studies.
