Introduction to Democracy and Democratization is a structured six-week introduction to democracy and democratization. Adapted from the twelve-session module Introduction to Comparative Government and Politics, it examines the foundations of the state, the development of democratic systems, political institutions, non-democratic regimes, collective action, and regime transitions. Through theory, case studies, and applied exercises, learners critically examine the processes and challenges of democratization. By the end of this course, participants will be able to: • Define and distinguish the key concepts of state, regime, government, political system, and democracy. • Explain the historical emergence and guiding principles of democratic states. • Analyze the structures and functions of democratic political institutions. • Compare democratic and non democratic states in terms of governance and state society relations. • Evaluate the role of collective action in shaping democratic participation. • Assess cases of regime change and explain the dynamics of democratic transition and consolidation. This module is suitable for a wide range of learners. Introductory-level participants benefit from overview lectures and case studies that clarify foundational ideas, while advanced participants deepen their understanding through assigned readings and analytical exercises. All learners strengthen their critical and analytical skills through discussions that encourage comparative thinking and debate.
