Selected Short Fiction by H? Anh Thái: The Goat Meat Special and Other Stories is part of ilearnforum’s Southeast Asian Languages and Literature Series. This six-week online module features selected stories from the bilingual collection The Goat Meat Special and Other Stories. It reads these works in the context of Vietnam’s postwar, post-central planning period, commonly known as the d?i m?i era, which reshaped the country’s society, culture, and everyday life. The period prompted new reflection on wartime experience and the challenges of reunification and transition, while also bringing the rise of a new wealthy class, a widening urban-rural divide, renewed cultural and spiritual practices, and the coming of age of a generation raised in peacetime. This module introduces contemporary Vietnamese literature through H? Anh Thái’s literary style and the central themes of his short stories, showing how they illuminate Vietnam’s political, social, cultural, and economic changes in the postwar and d?i m?i era.
